Rutherford and Tennant inspirational in Gentlemen Win!
A superb 86 by Ben Rutherford, and inspired captaincy from Steve Holness, which lead to Archie Tennant opening the bowling and foxing the French opponents, were just some of the highlights from an enjoyable game against the touring Lille CC side.
After being asked to bat, the new ball pairing of Sri.Srinath and French U17 international Manathir Abdul Rehman had Whitstable well tied down. Wickets also fell and with Andy Bennett well caught for 22, the home team were under pressure at 52-3, Then Ben Rutherford, with great support from Steve Holness added 83, before Holness was LBW for 18.
However Rutherford completed his half century and cut loose with 10 fours and 3 sixes, before being one of Benny Changivy four victims (4-47). Conrad Hazlett also bowled some excellent spin and deserved more than one wicket, but did take an outstanding catch on the boundary. In fact the Lille fielding was pretty sharp. The Whitstable middle order though melted away, before Jonty Barnes hit two huge sixes to help take the total to 185-9.
In reply, the hosts opened with youth. Archie Tennant (13yo) bowled some canny deliveries in his six overs and with a little more luck could have taken more than the one wicket against the prime Lille batting. Jonty Barnes (15yo) was also very lively with 1-16 in four overs. Mohan Uthayakumar, was looking very dangerous, on the back of his century against Davington CC the previous day. But the wily Andy Bennett soon sent him back to the pavilion despite his team's high score of 31. Mark Blake then made major inroads into the Lille team with 3-17, and though the Lille MOTM Manathir Abdul Rehman hit a lusty 19,it was left to Ben Rutherford to wrap up the win, taking the wicket of Philippe Dethoor, leaving Lille all out for 137, giving Whitstable a 48 run victory.
